硬质合金可转位铣刀铣削加工钢时，一般不浇注切削液，当切削液量充足可进行充分冷却时，也可浇注切削液(一般为水溶性切削液)。精铣时，为提高刀具寿命和被加工件表面质量，最好使用切削液充分冷却。硬质合金铣刀浇注切削液时，必须与切削同时或提前进行，不允许切削中途开始浇注。

铣削不锈钢时，一般采用非水溶性切削液，以改善铣削性能。

铣削铸铁时，一般不用切削液，只有在极少情况下为了解决切削中的粉尘问题时，才使用切削液。

铣削铝合金时，可采用切削液，主要目地是冷却和提高被加工件的表面质量。

立铣刀、三面刃铣刀加工槽时，因为是封闭式切削，温度较高，建议使用水溶性切削液或压缩空气充分冷却。
