美國的軍機字母編排是有點固的26個字母除了幾個字母沒有外事實上都有定義的。
早期時YF-22及YF-23是同時期製造出來的戰機但現在YF-22己成為現今的美國主力之一了當然也正式成軍因此他的編號亦改為F/A-22。
數字的編號是由五角大廈所訂的，而最後的字母則是代表不同的型別。

運輸機 C：Cargo
遙控機 D：Drone
電戰機 E：Electronic
戰鬥機 F：Figher
滑翔機 G：Glider
